Yes, you read it right. Deepfreeze. I've heard of this software utility years ago, it's that type of software where if you have it installed, up and running, if you do a restart, everything that you have saved, installed, edited, tweaked, may it be files or configuration, the computer will turn back to default setting, as for files, they will get deleted or disappear. For example you created a spreadsheet and your computer restarted, it's bye bye to that saved file because what the program does is that it deletes every file, program installed or added to the computer. Though i have to say deepfreeze is ideal for protecting your computer from viruses, trojans or whatever.
Anyway, what happened not too long ago was i needed to install DFS (Deep freeze Standard) on my computer, just recently a lot of my friends started using my computer for various purposes, so i had the idea of trying out deepfreeze, so just in case they transfer a file from their thumb drive / flash disk to my computer that might have a potential virus or spyware, thanks to deepfreeze it's going to get deleted.
So i downloaded the program from http://www.faronics.com/ ,installed the software and voila! my computer is now safe and sound.. protected.
..so i thought.
After the restart my computer started to show an intermittent internet connection via wireless from my router.
Every 10 sec my connection would get disconnected and get reconnected after 3-5 minutes. Same thing, over and over.
Obviously,
my first hint.. it was caused by the software that i recently putted on my computer. DEEPFREEZE! I never had problems with my computer before.
I tried to remove it the old-fashioned way, control panel > Add remove programs
but it wasn't there.
Now take note, my internet connection was intermittent, it was hard finding the solution, so for those people that connects via wireless for their internet and just had that software installed,
to save you the time, here's what i did...
Step 1: Press and hold down the shift button (don't let it go)
Step 2: Find the DEEP FREEZE icon located on the lower right side of your screen, near the system time.
Step 3: Double click the icon (while you still have shift key pressed down) *A screen should pop up*
Step 4: (you can let go of the shift button now) You should have there an option that would say *thaw after the next restart* Select that and your computer should restart on its own.
Step 5: After your computer has restarted, notice that the icon of DF is still there but this time it has an x-mark. Now, try to find the Deep freeze's installer ( if you can't find it, download it again). If you have located it, double click on it, this time choose uninstall. Your computer should restart.
Step 6: Go get a cup of coffee or whatever because you just uninstalled DF from your computer.
You can uninstall the software in a lot of ways, this is just one of them. Probably the easiest.
Oh, to finish up the story? I did a post on my blog, "How to uninstall Deepfreeze from your computer".
As for my friends, well i'll just have them scan their flash disk, attachments, hdd, before allowing them to copy or save files on my computer.
That'll work.
